When we face hardships, some of
us become very hard. And some of us become very malleable and vulnerable. A
hard shell gets not only rigid but very defensive. We don't want people to look
at us because we assume people will pity us.
This is not true as a general
feeling. There are people who care genuinely, not pity. But we have a tendency
to shun affection because we misunderstand even affectionate gestures as
arising out of pity. Not only is this sad but a sign of ego. When we insist of
returning every affectionate gesture with affection, it is beautiful. But when
we fail to accept graciously as much as we expect others to accept graciously
from us, THEN it is false pride and we must learn to understand the subtle
difference. Relationships are delicate.
