Gratify

We are all custodians of our own conscience. That little voice within us which judges our intentions and a tiny voice in the head that tells us “I did right” or “I did wrong”. Of course, the resulting emotion is either joy or guilt. Rather, SHOULD be if the conscience is more or less clean.

Sometimes, it isn’t though.  And you can make out by the same emotions. If you feel happy in doing the wrong thing, for example! To get back at someone, maybe! Or even overeating! Anything which you know you should not do.

It is gratifying to give ourselves a good certificate for doing what is right, even if no one appreciates it. Ultimately, we are really not looking for kudos from others. We don’t live by the conscience of others, do we?

Attitude

The fact is, we don’t see ourselves. If we saw ourselves and observed carefully, many things we criticise in others are present in us as well. And so, it is not correct for the pot to call the kettle black. The polishing is to be done by us on ourselves.

We are so external all the time. We may be sitting in bright light but instead of enjoying the illumination , we get preoccupied with wondering about the darkness outside !

Appreciating what we are and what we have is never done in full measure. Because, while looking out, we can just be one dimensional. This is the human tragedy. What lies inside is often denied due to fear and deep insecurities. And therefore, we see only a fragmented individual when we look within. And that is unpalatable. Hence, instead of doing something about it, we prefer to wish it away by distracting our minds into external avenues.

Ultimately, we pay the price for this attitude.

Traditions and culture

I truly believe that with every succeeding generation, some things change to get enhanced and some tend to deteriorate. We can imbibe what benefits us but to forgo our own traditions and culture is like mutilating a beautiful language instead of letting it evolve.

The concept of “old wine in a new bottle” applies to this superbly crafted Amazon original “Bundish Bandits”. The producers have done Hindustani Classical music great service by packaging the pure “bundish” or the classical song and raga rendition, contrasting it with contemporary music.

Very cleverly titled, this serial will inspire a new interest for our traditional raga based music. Much as we might appreciate the rhythm and compositions of the current digitalised music, this cannot be a substitute for the divinity of the pure notes which we refer to as “Naad Brahma” meaning that sound is god.

It is pure harmony, pure joy.

My deep appreciation for the way the old and the new have been blended without compromising the old. It is a serial which one can go on watching with match sticks in the eyes, wanting to watch just that one more episode.
