Spiritual Practices

I have realised that irregularity has been most damaging in my life. It has deprived me of using my time well.

Today, I understand that spiritual practices done with regularity provide stability of thought, an ability to NOT react and to become lighter as compared to my earlier intense self. Of course, there is plenty of work to be done…

I have been listening to Swami Sarvapriyananda ji on you tube and have been so humbly grateful for the impact of his simple , yet profound teachings on my life , that I actually sought and got a meeting with him recently.

So much synchronicity has happened that I can see how the universe works for all of us if we just get tuned in. Just listening to one talk of his per day can bring an immense awareness and open several doors for each of us.

I feel wonderfully blessed that I chanced upon his videos on you tube. Amazing !

Humility

We have a lesson to learn from the tree. You know, we are also shaped like a tree and we stand tall too. The tree has roots to ground it . And the roots are as deep as the tree is tall, for its stability and firm anchoring. And its highest branches and leaves touch the sky as if they had a connection with the Divine energy.

Most trees have fruit all over. All the fruit laden trees automatically bend with the weight of the fruit. Humility.

The tree stands in the sun, braves drastic weather conditions but never refuses shade to the humans. Generosity and compassion must be learnt from a tree.

But we humans are unable to balance ourselves. Both grounding (ego identity) and spiritual (soul) activity must be equally important in life. And the wiser you get, the more you have to bend with humility, like the tree.

These are truths of life and lessons from nature. Everywhere we turn, there are lessons we must learn. And all the elements of the earth teach us something valuable.

Teaching and learning

Teaching and learning go hand in hand. As we teach our children virtues, it is not a one way flow. It is a simultaneous opportunity for us to review our own principles. Somehow, adults do not retain what they learnt as children.

They say, life happens when they grow up. It’s never rung true. An excuse! Because all the wrong conditioning we adhere to very faithfully, so why not the right things we teach our kids?

Double standards and multiple standards which, fortunately, kids don’t know in their innocence; all the complexes and small mindedness are developed later, when we forget to apply our own teachings in our own lives.

Happiness Quotient

Your “swadharma”, your inner calling! One of the major preoccupations that can elude you for a long time, it is what comes to you naturally. Something you gave an aptitude for, something that gives you happiness. And you enjoy it.
But how do you know what is your calling in life? Especially today, when there are opportunities galore, unlike earlier when there were very few lines one could take. There is every chance of confusion or of making a wrong choice.
All achievers have had one thing in common, that they have enjoyed every minute and been passionate about what they did.
However, it can be a challenge for multi talented people. They may be good at academics, arts, culture and much more. People have been known to change their paths when they discover their true inner calling.
The best way is to observe what feelings your activities / your career path are generating. Be aware, discuss with your teachers and friends, if and when required, and go with your happiness quotient.
I have seen that those who do not have a calling don’t end up developing their personalities or confidence levels and become complex and with complexes also.
Let it suffice for me to know that I have my own calling like everyone else does and I need to find it. Have faith that it is there and try to
Find it, even with help and advice from others if you are confused. Once you find it and work on it, you will find yourself appreciating others instead of falling short in your eyes.

Intelligent decision

The aftermath is an encounter with a person of toxic energy can be an extremely debilitating one. Even retaliating makes you feel you are hitting against the wall and often, bleeding.
The tragic part is that you discover that you are not devoid of toxicity yourself because you actually did pretty much what you despised in the first place. Evidently, it is somewhere within and bursts forth without warning triggered off by the other person.
Walking away from situations is probably an intelligent decision. Ignoring is another solution. Gritting your teeth and smiling is another but jokes apart, although it gets tough to not retaliate when someone is being plain obnoxious, it is wiser to step aside. And if you have a relapse, try and try again.

Faith

We look back with sorrow. We look around with worry. We look up with faith. Wonderful thoughts I read the other day. If you close the chapter of the past and let bygones be bygones, there would be no sorrow. When our minds are engaged with what is happening around us, we are worried. And that is much of the time. But if you have faith, you look up to the Almighty. And then, there is no time or need to look around or look back. That faith is all pervasive. And if you notice, the English language also has no opposite of the word “faith", because that is the ultimate. So, the opposite of belief is disbelief. Which means belief systems can change but faith? There is nothing beyond.

Never forget a lesson

Grow through what you go through. It is amazing how one sentence can be like an ocean of teaching. Living through the experience is the only way to grow. A personal experience is more profound than any words. Remember how we were as parents, always sheltering our kids instead of allowing them to have their own share of experiences? And what happened to these children? Many of them could not create and grow into their own spaces. But some parents chose to teach them how to reason and think and experience and grow. For example, children must be allowed to fall and get up, rather than being prevented from falling.
At every stage from the toddler stage to adulthood, the importance of our own experience cannot be underestimated. Once we experience, we learn from it. Mere words cannot change us unless we imbibe teachings sincerely and allow them to sink in deeply. But we never forget a lesson when we have lived the episode.
