The Acts of Benevolence

How fickle are we if we change every moment, being good with good people and nasty and petty with those whose reactions and behavior towards us is unacceptable to us! Generally, because we WANT love and caring but are too weak to give in return what we are looking for. It should not make us feel good when others are criticized. Because it does not mean that WE are accepted. And we won’t be, until we look within and accept who we are.

Like it is said… you can dish it out but you can’t take it! On a deeper level, this really damages us. No one else is affected adversely but us. We are unable to bear ourselves when we bare ourselves to ourselves. There is something to be said about being steady and not retaliatory. Like the sun always shines despite the clouds. And the light always illuminates darkness, not worrying about the quality of darkness.

The worst human aberration is expectations. If i want to be a free spirit, why do I want to tie others down with MY expectations? Double standards! And if I don’t know the stories of other people’s lives, what right do I have to judge at all?

There is one more aberration that of taking advantage of people’s goodness. The reason why the human race started doing this is because it lost its simplicity and its spirituality. What went out was trust, with every act of selfishness. And here we do, not know what lies behind the smile and the acts of benevolence.

Spiritual Thinking

At what point do you even start practising detachment ? Even partial detachment ? No one teaches you that and by virtue of being in a family and then being a householder, the last thing that you think of is getting detached. In fact, you are more attached with every passing minute. To all your relationships, to all your achievements, to all the accolades you get, to your power over people and situations… and all of that and more… until your head in in the clouds, far away from ground reality !

Generally, these also result in a lot of non virtuous thinking and behaviour.

So, with so many thick layers of attachment around and within, imagine starting the process of detachment! Sounds ludicrous, right ? And impossible !

And yet, they tell you it is better than medication and can help you become more peaceful and to becoming a more wholesome individual than you are at this time.

This trend of thought might be yours more with moving out of active life, if at all… and that too, not always.

It is sometimes the product of changed circumstances, from your children leaving the home, the family becoming scattered and similar reasons… situations that are unpleasant and that teach you that suffering is caused by attachment to everyone and everything.

But sometimes, it comes voluntarily with a bent of mind towards spiritual thinking , knowledge of the birth and death cycle and the need to use your life as a clean up opportunity .

What that cleansing is or should be is the main course of study while we live. Sure, attachment is a major, major cause of misery because along with it comes expectations. A double whammy !

Judging

Why do people judge others when they know nothing about their story ? Do they feel superior ? Because if they do, they must think again ! They themselves have plenty to hide and are as imperfect as anyone else.

The main crux of the issue is here. The inner eye is blinded. So, we can see only others and their behaviour. This is the most dangerous part of ignorance: to think you know everything when you know nothing ! In fact, you don’t even want to know anything because the prejudice is so intense.

We all look for peace by shunning people and getting within a safe cacoon. But this is just not possible. Because sooner or later, the butterfly will emerge and will have to face strong winds and extreme weather conditions. But alas ! Where is wisdom in the wake of ignorance ?

The biggest burden that Mother Earth carries today is the human being.

Motivation

Sometimes, I wonder if we see ourselves the way others see us ? In a way, it is a good thing to be oblivious ! Live  in our own world !

Though , if we did see ourselves from the  eyes of another, , we would not do the many things we do. We would check our behaviour.

Sensitivity develops only with the scrutiny by others. We just don’t analyse our own selves while being extra quick in interpreting the actions of others.

Huge misunderstandings can deplete our energies big time if we don’t watch out ! Only because we only did what most people do anyway.. blame someone else ! Without knowing even half of what might have motivated someone to do what they did.

Old story ! New episodes every day !

Morality

How would you define morality? Can there be a set of moral values common to all? Sure! Because what is wrong cannot be right but who defines what is right and moral? Today, anyone can do anything and get away with it. Mostly! Where are the values that prevent people from venturing into the space of others so easily and without remorse or guilt? We want. We take. No looking left or right. This cannot really go on forever. Something has to give and once more, some semblance of decency that befits Indian culture must return to stay.
