Consquences

Pain is an inevitable part of life, the outcome of challenges and often unpalatable experiences. We tend to internalize it and react to it. The resistance to it is what brings suffering.

What works is accepting situations and letting the pain out with an understanding that it is all an essential part of the flow and of our growth.

A river collects stones, dried leaves, sticks and all kinds of pollution that it picks up along its course, but still weaves its way around them to reach the ocean. Similarly, we need to recognize that just as a river does not go against its flow, all creation also has a natural progression. The course has been chartered for us but we either don’t see it or are in denial. And very foolish in our ignorance. Even more so because we see only short term benefits, failing to see the long term implications of those short term benefits. Never forget that the wheel of our lives keeps turning.

Unfortunately, man is the only creature that defies the natural laws, with undesirable consequences for the whole world, as we see this happening more and more in current times.

Realization

They don’t say “old is gold” for nothing! It takes a long time for feelings to percolate down into your heart and only then can you bypass the idiosyncrasies of a person and let them find a place in your heart. It takes a long while and a lot of letting go of the superficial nature to find something deeper.

But once in a while and rarely, you do come across a soul match that was waiting for the right time to come into your life.

When you are down and out, this happens strangely and quite suddenly!

Life is full of unexpected twists and turns, with a realization that nothing is in our control but the one who rules our destinies also is merciful enough to put up with many foolishness’s of his children who are riddled with ignorance and yet, so loved by HIM, giving us innumerable chances to see HIM clearly by doing HIS bidding.

Counting all the blessings every day.

Perception

At some point, we must recognize the fact that we are very limited beings in the general scheme of things. We would like to attribute to ourselves qualities which give us a sense of well-being. A lot of this comes from our ignorance and from deluding ourselves.

We are creatures of perception, often quite superficial, I might add. We live in a three dimensional world but some of us are one dimensional.

Each of us has to grapple with what life doles out. Can anyone live someone else’s life and karma? The reply would unanimously be a “NO”. And yet, what do we do? We are busy trying to teach others what we have not learnt ourselves yet. We are desperate to control others, wield power enough to change them. But let us look within and ask how much WE have been able to change! But we would still judge without knowing even ten percent of their stories. Prejudices and conflict dot the lines of our horizons.

I have yet to understand why we feel deserve “better” than others or feel entitled to invade the privacy of others or malign them. What basis do we have?

We have, due to our insecurities, created a sad society in which happiness means running down people, hurting them unnecessarily, living selfishly and keeping the whole cake without attributes like sharing and caring.

Each day takes us a little closer to the end of this life. Do we not care ?

Self-improvement

Self-improvement starts with the surrender of arrogance, ego and cultivating humility. We are constantly becoming aware of what we should be giving up to gain a foot in the door of heaven, so to speak.

Spirituality implies a gradual elimination of the unwanted that we have wanted all our lives, in our ignorance.

Yes, it could shake comfort levels. It could isolate in a small way and later, as your practices increase, in a big way also. But this kind of isolation does not necessarily take you away from people. It may lead to a dropping of people whose energies are not on par with yours at that time.

There is however, no cause for any lament! That is a natural phenomenon. It WILL happen.

Ultimately, this is not a loss but a gain. A gain to strengthening your energy to be directed towards a higher awareness and higher goals.

Reflection and Practice

Sometimes, when we start talking about spiritual thought, we also run the risk of a little spiritual arrogance! There are many texts being quoted but little reflection and practice.

There are no mountains to climb but simple steps towards uncovering our spiritual base which we have, sometimes in our ignorance, covered with confused thoughts. We may be led to think we are on the right track but we may not be.

Overt behavior sometimes is judged as non-spiritual. It need not be. Our basic nature prevails unless we work on it. But human goodness can still be lurking within. Superficial judgements can be completely off the mark.

Humans have a tendency to judge people superficially because generally, they see only the surface of a person. Whereas, the teal person can be very different.

Therefore, both judging people and gossiping speaks of the shallowness of the people who indulge in it.

Let us get out of both tendencies because we have been the victims of both at one time or another and we definitely have not enjoyed the experience. So why indulge in them at all?

Creation

The ultimate reality is that all creation is one. All humans are therefore, one. So, are we always going to be working from our ignorance and separating from each other through what appears to be but is an error of perception at best? And not what IS? Because we never focused on what IS! We are so superficial that we only judge through our habits and cultural differences! So, wearing a certain garb gives an identity to one but is seen as different from what another wears … and merely on such outward appearances, we distance ourselves. And religion does a lot of this. Little differences become huge and reasons to actually kill because of a complete intolerance of people who APPEAR different. I wonder why we cannot focus on the inner similarities and find it in our hearts to love each other! Plenty of similarities…. The colour of blood The body parts and organs The mind An intellect Memories Breath Consciousness Awareness … and so much else! So then, why are we so separatist in our thinking? And we talk about it ad nauseum But do nothing about it! Just some topic for conversation? And that’s it? Why? Because each of us is wanting change outside first. Right? Ignorance

Progress starts with an intention to learn, to improve from our programmed selves. All rage , anger comes from past conditioning of the mind.

The huge difference between Duryodhana and Arjun was the one single point .. that Duryodhan knew he was wrong but he did not feel like doing the right. And Arjun wanted to learn from the advice of Krishna.

God is on the side of one who wants to change erroneous thought and behaviour .

There is something negative in us that impels wrong behaviour, on the excuse that either the need to misbehave is all consuming or the reactions are uncontrollable. In either case, it would be an effort to  want to change, preceded by a sincere intention to recognise wrong as wrong and having the awareness to transform that into right.

These are mere words for many, for this process needs much time and energy as also deviation from the other “comfortable” habits acquired over time.

This aspect is not and should not be prioritised only by senior citizens and those who are in the “vanaprastha” or “Sanyas” stage of life. In fact, it should start early in life to avoid future confusion and mistakes due to ignorance.

When I see the surge of self enquiry abroad, I wonder what is the percentage of people In India that is aware its own ancient knowledge and the beautiful truth that it teaches .

We really can’t hide behind the language barrier of Sanskrit as the language of the texts. There are innumerable channels available in several languages to remove the ignorance we happily live with. We just have to tune in to the frequency with trust and faith.

For that to happen, a spark of self enquiry needs to be lit within us.

Emotions

Don’t subscribe to feelings like envy, jealousy , hatred, dislike, resentment and don’t bottle up these emotions…. hurts and harbouring of negativity has been known to lead to various diseases. Apart from causing acute suffering .

Why do we wantonly invite these when there are so many ways of healing oneself ? Even on the basis of common sense, have these bettered our world in any way ? Or have we harmed ourselves repeatedly ?

Let us atleast start with this awareness. It is a baby step towards deeper awareness which comes gradually with more thinking, more cleansing, and above all, realising how futile all this is.

Why be complicated when we can be simple ?

Why look at others and feel a lack when each one of us has the same spiritual core ?

Why deny and stand still when we can accept and move on ?

Why focus on problems instead of solutions ?

Why live in ignorance when knowledge can liberate us ?

Judging

Why do people judge others when they know nothing about their story ? Do they feel superior ? Because if they do, they must think again ! They themselves have plenty to hide and are as imperfect as anyone else.

The main crux of the issue is here. The inner eye is blinded. So, we can see only others and their behaviour. This is the most dangerous part of ignorance: to think you know everything when you know nothing ! In fact, you don’t even want to know anything because the prejudice is so intense.

We all look for peace by shunning people and getting within a safe cacoon. But this is just not possible. Because sooner or later, the butterfly will emerge and will have to face strong winds and extreme weather conditions. But alas ! Where is wisdom in the wake of ignorance ?

The biggest burden that Mother Earth carries today is the human being.

Ignorance

I often think of why and how we find it in our hearts to be ungrateful at all ! Right from gratitude to God for this life as a human being, to every little support that we get from nature, from our loved ones, from a pin to an elephant.... everything needs gratitude. For every human connected with our lives, endless gratitude. Gratitude for what we have and are, to what we don’t have or are not meant to have, for there is always a reason for everything.

For teaching us , for spurning us so that we turn to God, for rejecting us so that we understand that our source is not this world.

The inability to see what is so obvious is the same trait that exists in people who, otherwise, profess to be intelligent in many ways.

Only the heart can go beyond. To perceive the value of gratitude . Because it is the bridge between the world and source, between earth chakras and divine chakras. It is indeed a pity to waste a life in ignorance, that gratitude begets more worthiness to receive more abundance.

Love and Attention

Loved ones weaken your strength sometimes.  How much of that feeling is love and how much attachment is vital to your well being. “Moha” which is attachment is considered a human affliction because it borders on ignorance of our spirituality. Attachment is limited to our time on the earth and makes us needy and dependent. On people, on material Possessions etc.  Even on getting love and attention. Crutches!

It pays to get stronger with every realization of being attached or it will keep us rooted while others move on.

Talent

Conforming is a talent I have not seen much of. It seems people find it difficult to fall in line as it were. You make a rule and you can be sure it will be broken more than once. The mind is unable to remember with consistency. Alternatively, it may not be taken seriously at all. Amazes me sometimes ! How can one repeat the same mistake again and again ?
In school, we had to conform. In certain homes, children have to conform. But as adults, we don't think it is necessary to conform. In short, it spells a lack of respect for any rules made by others. Too much of individual assertions without understanding the importance of being able to conform when required. Another yardstick of balance.
