Learn

We learn something every day. There is sometimes a first time and a new experience. And sometimes, repeated similar experiences because we DON’T. It is typical that these repeated experiences will keep coming. Until we learn what we are supposed to.

On a lighter note, this happens when we don’t address a WhatsApp message. The message will keep coming up on the screen until we read it.   it is a constant reminder that repeated patterns must be addressed.

Philosophy of life

We say we have choices. At least, all humans are supposed to have free will and choices. Yet, we have so many issues! Why, when we have can make our decisions?

The whole thing is, the choices we make don’t guarantee the results we want. So, we are constantly in a state of turmoil.

If only the consequences were in our hands!!! Life is never a straight, predictable line. There is a super saying in Marathi symbolizing life: वाकड़ी तिकड़ी वलणे; Full of twists and turns.

I know one or two people who enjoy the ride. They take things in their stride. And they know how to balance when the twists and turns come. What crucial knowledge, sir jee! Makes life really into a joy ride!

I really admire them because you have to be spiritual in your philosophy of life, or, it might make for a huge struggle. Strength and spirituality is a deadly combination.

Human relationships

Don't judge people from where you are. Everyone has a story. I read a very beautiful story which is relevant to this thought.
A father and son were travelling by train with a young couple sitting in the same compartment.
The son, looking out of the window, shouted excitedly, "dad, look ! The trees are going back!”
Then again, he said, "dad, look, the clouds are running with us".
The young couple told the father, “You should take your son to a doctor. There is something wrong with him".
The father said," we are just returning from the doctor. My son was blind from birth and has just got his eyes back."
The couple was ashamed for their hasty judgment.
So, you see, we constantly feel the need to judge overt actions without understanding what inspired them in the first place. Human relationships are always in trouble because we judge more and care less. We are so keyed up that we don't even know how to smile at someone who does not smile at us. We don't know kindness, caring and sharing.
But we do live easily on a lack of trust, suspicion, grudges, envy and constant insecurity emanating out of a deep sense of inadequacy which we seldom address. We live on a superficial self image most of the time.
If we are on a judging spree, let us judge ourselves and see where we can improve and let the others introspect on themselves. Mind our own store.

Justifications

Have you noticed that when you plan and work towards something, there will most certainly be last minute glitches and little, little obstacles coming your way, Sudden changes and sudden diversions. It is uncanny. And this goes on through life. I often ask whether some people go through more and some less. Whether some go through less but more intense experiences or little irritants throughout life?
But then, you have to find justifications to accept that which is beyond control. That is the bottom line. This thought is perhaps a continuation of my earlier thought in a recent post:
That life happens when we are busy planning it according to our desires. However, let us not dwell just on these but on the larger happiness beyond the immediate hurdles that makes life worth living.

Self assessment

It seems a dilemma when Krishna asks Arjuna to surrender all his actions to him and act according to dharma. On the other hand, we are taught to take ownership of our actions. Those who go into these questions find no easy formula to master. When to surrender and when to own our actions?
A constant self assessment is a way to understand the qualitative difference between these two. Even surrender is not that simple. To surrender completely is not even to plan and just let things happen. Just flow. Can we do that? Generally Impossible.
We really need to understand all the layers of our mind that we create for ourselves and then find ways to peel them off when understanding dawns. Meditation is a powerful tool to scan ourselves in a way no MRI or ECG can.
The inner voice speaks only when there is silence around it and it can be heard.

Quality of life

It is the truth that things will go to ruin only if WE let them. People and events will get the better of us if we let them. The ball is always in our court even if it was thrown by someone else. And if we don't want it, WE have to make the effort to send it back.
So, there is really no scope for hopelessness at all. Between the creative and logical parts of the brain lie all ideas , ways to accomplish what we want to and all processing of thoughts and information and then ...the challenge to make it all work and NOT get intimidated by anyone or anything. This the last but lethal stop where everything can reach a dead end.
Shying away from life for whatever reason may well is termed as defensive living. It could mean accepting the dent in the quality of life which could otherwise be enhanced with personal effort.
Because it is true that life will be what WE make of it.
