Happiness

Among the thousands of thoughts per day, if you analyse them, you will be shocked to see how many are merely ego driven reactions. There is no substance there. But we still internalise them and then go into a frenzy of an emotional whirlpool. “I” am hurt. “I” cannot forgive this.”I” will hit back.

What is this “I” ? WHO is this “I”? Only this one question and its answer can relieve so many toxins that we build up in our systems. What is the point ? Has anyone become happy harbouring so many unwanted toxins ? In fact, quite the reverse.

To be at peace, letting worthless thoughts and reactions slide off you is therapy. For the self , and indirectly that which spills over to others in the form of our attitudes , our mentality.

Nothing should  matter except the pain of our loved ones as well as of those we can help. The energies that we fritter away aught really to be kept intact for benevolent acts , both to ourselves and to others. The main purpose in life is to give back in equal measure what life has given us.

I have understood that by expecting anyone to behave as we want is also an ego exercise to force “other” behaviour into making US feel good. No one is duty bound to make us feel good. That is a personal choice. Happiness is an internal fountain.

Memories

Sometimes, the clouds suddenly disperse and the sun shines in all its glory. And sometimes, we wait and wait for it to emerge from the clouds. Exactly the way life happens. Sudden happiness and often, we have to pass through “ this too shall pass” phases. And they do pass.

Just remember not to store the wounds and the reasons for them. That won’t help. What WILL help is dropping those memories. Forgive. Forget. Gratitude. Abundance. Nothing lasts. So, why should memories ?

Forget and forgive

It’s time to heal ourselves. How much conflict do we want? Aren’t we tired? Of all the negativity, all the gnawing desires of more and more and more. Insatiable wants!

It’s time to heal. Empty out our hearts of all we have bottled up and release it all to the winds. Let’s breathe easier. Let’s love more. Forget and forgive hate, envy, cravings ... and be at peace with ourselves.

What is it that we search? It is all within us.

Memories

I marvel at people who just take things for granted. Because what you really take completely for granted is the most fragile. Yes, LIFE!

Is there any guarantee that we will even wake up in the morning? Every day, we hear of sudden health issues, some discovered too late even because, before manifesting, they were festering within.

One would imagine that after witnessing one or two such cases, people would become more sensitive to those around them and aware of the fact that they can be lost to them anytime.

And yet, this awareness is very slow to come in, if at all. It is very essential to spend as much time with each other and build up strong and loving memories to last and transfer to each succeeding generation. We survive only on good memories, and we have to create them ourselves.

The Freedom Movement

Our generation, which was born around the freedom movement, much idealism , patriotism, the spirit of sacrifice, of honour and integrity, has more than its share of emotions. Emotions were our ammunition to deal with injustice and for a strike for independence from colonialism.
We were also taught to give more than take. We respected morality, ethics and principles. We were loyal to family, to social ethics, to senior citizens and prided ourselves in being the way we were.
Today, we are gradually beginning to realise that these are the values to imbibe. Standing tall is in fashion, thanks to our PM, who is as humane as he is a no nonsense Indian, proud and self respecting not only on his behalf but on behalf of the nation. He exudes an exemplary and inspiring persona. You want to emulate him.
It strikes a chord within my generation and sparks a hope that we can salvage the traditional and cultural heritage that keep our heads held high. Proud to be an Indian , especially from the earlier generation.

Sense of excitement

If only every human being had that one ingredient for life: a sense of excitement! Like, when we are sitting at the edge of our seats in a thriller movie, just waiting to see what the next scene will bring. If we could translate that into our lives and wait for the next thing to happen!
Of course, there are sad episodes one can't possibly equate to anywhere close to exciting. There are "Navarasas" or nine types of emotions, all of which are within us. Yet, our attitudes make us. Or break us very easily said than done though.
When life happens, the best of us crumble at times. But we accept that we crumbled. And then the resurrection happens. And we look ahead again at what life brings to us next.

Quality of life

It is the truth that things will go to ruin only if WE let them. People and events will get the better of us if we let them. The ball is always in our court even if it was thrown by someone else. And if we don't want it, WE have to make the effort to send it back.
So, there is really no scope for hopelessness at all. Between the creative and logical parts of the brain lie all ideas , ways to accomplish what we want to and all processing of thoughts and information and then ...the challenge to make it all work and NOT get intimidated by anyone or anything. This the last but lethal stop where everything can reach a dead end.
Shying away from life for whatever reason may well is termed as defensive living. It could mean accepting the dent in the quality of life which could otherwise be enhanced with personal effort.
Because it is true that life will be what WE make of it.

Introspection

At some point in time, we have to answer one important question to ourselves, and that is, what does each of us stand for? This introspection is most important for those who don't have a perspective or have not explored this within themselves.
We don't realize that our self esteem largely depends on this. When you don't take a stand or your stand is that you don't want to take a stand at all is when you are divided into several people within yourselves, each saying a different thing and initiating a perpetual tug of war.
To live meaningfully, it is essential to live by a set of rules, ideologies, norms and goals which determine and define YOU. So, when you are not happy or taking your identity from how others perceive you, you have yet to come into your own.
The idea is not to get swept away by the tide but to use resistance so as to stand upright even around quick sands and when to resist and how much to resist is the evidence of a dawning wisdom and of standing in your own space with conviction.

Compulsions

How many compulsions we have to deal with in life on a regular basis! A lot of energy is lost if we look at them as necessary evils. To HAVE to do something against our wishes needs an instant infusion of extra energy in the form of mustering up a little more enthusiasm than we actually want at that point.
There is heaviness and reluctance and a need to just become invisible so that there is no compulsion foisted on us.
But actually, that compulsion could be pushing us towards new experiences which we would be deprived of otherwise. It is like not wanting new experiences and getting caught in a limited space because we are comfortable there.
I have realized this fact. And each time I have surrendered to compulsions, I have gained in one way or another. Rather than avoid them and miss out on a piece of life. It could be that the universe wants us to have that experience and that may be the right time for it. And maybe, we would emerge wiser, better and happier in the bargain.

Quality of emotion

People say it is good to take people and things at face value ....hmmm...really? But what is the end result of taking such an attitude? Evidently, something like taking everything with a pinch of salt! So, that makes for a lot of salt in the system! And salt retains water in the body. Water, you know, is a symbol of emotions. Which means, if you are taking that attitude, you are doing it superficially and suppressing a lot of emotion in the bargain?

Otherwise, how come people who appear to be breezy, nonchalant and least affected are afflicted with serious ailments? Strokes! Heart attacks! Lung diseases! These reflect an inability to breathe in life positively.

Excess emotion can be a big killer. So, it is always better to accept the quality of emotion you are feeling, run through it and cleanse it immediately. We can pretend before others. Can we run away from ourselves?
