Sympathize

If we recorded our daily output of words and played them back to ourselves, how many words would be those of criticism and gossip of others?

The state of our minds can be really understood by this exercise.

I am sure most of us realize what we are saying and the intention behind what we are saying. It is just the compulsion to say it that is often suspect, even disturbing.

Speech is a gift we need to use very carefully. Even when we sympathize with people without this gift, we don’t mend our ways.

If we cannot say a good word, it is better not to say anything. For the sake our own minds which will get polluted and we then have the extra work to clean them up.

Why not then just be quiet and peaceful and watch the world go by? Instead of taking on unnecessary piles of rubbish that was never yours to carry in the first place.

Calmness

My guru asked me whether, while meditating, time is slow to pass or passes quickly without my noticing it. And I realized that this is the measure of how successful your first level of meditation is. Some people struggle to sit for those few minutes and some lose track of time.
The latter happens when you actually start enjoying the meditation, when you become peaceful, not necessarily because all thoughts stop but because you learn to observe your thoughts dispassionately. And don’t allow them to affect your inner calm and peace.
People misunderstand the concept of meditation and think it is going to be a drastic and permanent shift. But it won’t be though you CAN increase your hours of meditation gradually to times when you are working, eating, even conversing, by keeping your inner core unaffected and steady with calmness.

Spirit of equilibrium

I notice in others and myself that we all seem to be a little different when we are out of our daily routines , for example when we travel to other cities, as compared to the places we reside in. Somehow, more relaxed but naturally, we do have less responsibilities than in our own homes and offices. I see friends wanting a change every so often. And they run away.
This does make me wonder whether we, as humans, with a natural tendency to be free, to feel free, are unable to sustain that inner spirit of equilibrium and an equanimous state of being. Which means our responses to external stimuli change with both people and places? Which again means, we get affected and that’s not such a good thing because we are not in our control.
This means there is a lot of work to be done. Life is an eternal project in motion. It stops or slows down here and there. And when it does, we need to kick start it again.

A Nomadic life

A nomadic life is such a free life in so many ways. They have little opportunity to get attached to places because they never stay long enough . And even the few days are spent mostly amidst nature. In tents. Yes, they seem to be a close knit community and therefore, attached to and protective of their own . Lifestyle diseases elude them at the best of times and worst of times. Happiness is not a special acquisition.
City bred folks have all kinds of issues. For sunlight , they have to specially go into the sunlight. For exercise to the gym. There is little informal meeting and more meeting friends with appointments. What happened to the word “spontaneity”? Not to mention the artifice that seems to set in , often as a part of the survival kit, among other pretensions.
Simple pleasures are simply not sought. Those days are gone when small town life also made frequent inroads into nature . And the five star culture has deprived people of the wonderful experience of living on farms and rustic life. Even farms have five star homes now.
Spoilt, aren’t we ? But more than that , we have lost out on the beauty of being one with nature. I guess, what you have never experienced, you don’t miss.

The Era of knowledge

This is the era of knowledge predominance, so much technology, Brilliance etc. But we have not emerged from our decadent mindsets yet. Look at the kind of "education” our entertainment industry provides us. We talk about equality, rights of women, leveling out the society, going back to "family", respecting women (huge one, this!)
Women, even today, are depicted in the worst ways. Watch an Indian or Pakistani drama (similar people in both countries) and the most prominent theme is women bashing, subservience and ill treatment of women, woman against woman (as in mother in law and sister in law), intrigue, attempt by the family to destroy the daughter in law because of dowry (sick!) or the obsessive tendencies of the mother in law and sisters in law to control the "son" of the family...COME ON!
And we talk of changing our world by making it progressive. We know that generations after generations internalize these situations, machinations, dangerous and vicious intrigue and vicarious pleasure at the downfall of others. So much so that we copy reel life and paste it in real life.
In real life, we may not have women characters retiring for the night in their finest heavy saris and jewelry but we do have the masses enjoying all the politics and deviousness in families on television and don't necessarily forget about them to go into loving and caring ways with the family, friends and society.
The thinkers say it is their choice to see what appeals to them and that you can't dictate what should be produced and aired. But the appeal of exposure to and specially the enjoyment of such dramas/ serials can be vital to the health of family, community and country, because they create regressive attitudes and "license to kill" with self indulgence of every kind. These are people who specialize in herd mentality and don't have opinions of their own. AND, they idolize actors and juxtapose their roles in their own lives, the erosion of values, Eve teasing, violations of women, these gain momentum. But we don't have any forum to exorcise our people of thinking and behavioral patterns, including a corrupt judiciary and police.
What all are we going to and HOW are we going to clean up these to add to the “swachh Bharat" endeavor? If insides are rotting, what cleanliness can we see outside? We will have understood the wholesome and vast implications of "swachh" first.

Self-esteem

I have noticed that complexed people often not only have low self-esteem, they also retreat into themselves and prefer to hold back than brush away their fears and hesitation. You are done if you justify your stand because then, coming out of it is really difficult.
Do you endear yourself to yourself? Odd question, Not at all. In fact, THE right question. Because if you don't see anything within yourself that endears you to yourself, most likely you won't feel that you CAN endear yourself to others.
The answer lies in your shaking off the wrong ways of thinking which a body of complexes becomes with you, and approach life and people with simplicity and honesty. Not worth it to become heavy weight with negativity.

Transparent energy

It is strange how, with the passage of time, so many things that meant the world to you at one point in time become so completely irrelevant, even inconsequential. That includes people too. What happens?
Needs change for one. Often, focus shifts to other things. Some things work for a while and then become redundant. We move on. But some don't. And the latter category thrives on memories which are not so pleasant.
Obviously, only when we outgrow something does it become redundant. But nothing is written in stone in this universe and some of this can come back and become relevant again if we don't block it out with negative energy.
It is called an open mind. Never consider a door closed. If an experience has to come back, it will. Also, because it was required for one's evolutionary process.
So, to be so transparent energy that light can pass through and experiences can flow through is the best way to go, to just be.

Compassion

If you look back at your life events, you will always find some people that you have had issues with. Some you forgive and from some you seek forgiveness. And you also forgive yourself for hurting people and mistakes made.
However, I wish it were that simple! Actually, it IS that simple to my mind. But not so to other people. In everyone's life, there are some people who refuse to forgive. Hmmm... out of our control, right? But how do we react to this non forgiveness? Arrogantly? Humbly? Aggressively? With compassion and understanding?
You might say, "But it is not about me". But really speaking, it IS about you, too, because you were a party to the interaction.
It is interesting to see how such incidents confront you and how you need to make peace with them, at least from your side. You are not responsible for the emotions or decisions of others. You can only clean up your slate. And that's what should be done. When things and people stop affecting you is when you are on your way to real freedom.

Regressive

A very positive way to look at life and its unfolding. The dice turns regularly even in a dice game. But the two situations are so different!
The dice game is happening for a while only and on the outside. Externally. Life situations have each of us at the core. It is very difficult to externalize situations as if they are happening to someone else. We can smile sportingly if we lose a game like Ludo or Snakes & Ladders and move on. But can we equally smile away losing in real life circumstances? Failure becomes the repeated theme of our minds. And moving on a completely unavailable option to the mind at that point.
What this post says is to understand that every throw of the dice in life, whether "1" or "6" is designed to teach something. And a lesson learnt is certainly a step forward.
When people talk of being "regressive", it only means lessons are unlearnt and repeated negative patterns established.

Karma Theory

When Lord Krishna returned home after the battle of Mahabharata, his wife Rukmani confronted him “How could you be party to the killing of Guru Drona and Bheeshma, who were such righteous people and had a lifetime of righteousness behind them.”
Initially Lord Krishna avoided her questions but when she did not relent, he replied “No doubt they had a lifetime of rightousness behind them but they both had committed one single sin that destroyed all their lifetime of righteousness”
Rukmani asked “And what was that sin?”
Lord Krishna replied “They were both present in the court when a lady (Draupadi) was being disrobed and being elders they had the authority to stop it but they did not. This single crime is enough to destroy all righteousness of this world”
Rukmani asked “But what about Karna? He was known for his charity. No one went emptyhanded from his doorstep. Why did you have him killed?”
Lord Krishna said “No doubt Karna was known for his charity. He never said ‘No’ to anyone who asked him for anything. But when Abhimanyu fell after successfully fighting an army of the greatest warriors and he lay dying, he asked for water from Karna who stood nearby. There was a puddle of clean water where Karna stood but not wanting to annoy his friend Duryodhan, Karna did not give water to a dying man. In doing so his charity of a lifetime was destroyed. Later in battle, it was the same puddle of water in which the wheel of his chariot got stuck and he was killed.”
Understand that your one act of injustice can destroy your whole life of honesty. This story is great example of Karma Theory in Path to Prosperity. So let’s create any Karma with Awareness what is righteous.

Compassionate

Understanding people! How often do we actually understand what is going on in the lives of people? Or, even attempt to ? Most of the time, we end up reacting to every look, every word....every gesture...
When we are in public, we expect a certain kind of behavior from people. But we forget, as we don our masks, others do, too. But a mask is a mask after all. It can slip with an unexpected trigger. And when the facade drops momentarily and the hurt and pain are revealed, we never stop to think of the reasons why that person may have accidently become transparent. Instead, we react immediately.
Understanding people is nothing short of personal healing. When you attribute a genuine reason to a person's slipped mask, you will feel a sense of well being for yourself for having been compassionate. For having gone into the depth of a person's psyche to recognize the soul within. What can be more elevating?
